KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe 2023, the largest open source conference in Europe to date, has taken up the theme of sustainability in software engineering. Keynote and breakout sessions addressed issues such as energy consumption, carbon emissions, and environmental impact in cloud applications and infrastructure. The CNCF Environmental Sustainability Technical Advisory Group (TAG ENV) aims to support and lead the cloud-native community in addressing these concerns. In a recent article written by us at the TAG ENV, we recapped the environmental sustainability-related talks at the conference and highlights the growing momentum in this area. Various open-source contributors are working on technical solutions to reduce the impact of cloud computing on climate change. The TAG ENV community is actively involved in spreading awareness, collaborating on best practices, and creating tools and documentation for environmental sustainability. Attendees expressed excitement about the discussions, project meetings, and the growing interest in sustainability within the cloud-native ecosystem. The article concludes by inviting individuals to join TAG ENV and contribute to the cause of environmental sustainability in the cloud-native space.
